Health Coalition Aotearoa is excited to launch their 2025 webinar series, kicking off with a compelling discussion on vaping among youth.

This webinar brings together five wahine on the front lines of the vaping epidemic among youth to offer an overview of the problem, the tactics used by an industry reliant on building and sustaining a young market, the regulatory and enforcement landscape, the impact on Māori rangatahi, whānau, and parents – and how we can fight for a vape free future. As a high school principal, MC Claire Amos is well positioned to bring these various strands together and facilitate a brief Q & A to finish.

Dr Jude Ball is a senior research fellow affiliated to the Department of Public Health, University of Otago Wellington to the ASPIRE Aotearoa tobacco control research centre. She is also a member of HCA’s Smokefree Expert Advisory Group (SEAG). Jude will discuss the extent of the problem and what the Government is doing to tackle it.

Dr Lucy Hardie is a Research Fellow at the University of Auckland’s School of Population Health and a member of HCA’s SEAG. Lucy will look at the tobacco industry’s tactics and what multinationals do to try and hook young customers.

Charyl Robinson is co-founder of Vape-Free Kids NZ and is based in Wellington. She is also a member of HCA’s SEAG. Charyl will discuss how parents in NZ have played a crucial role in raising awareness over poor enforcement. She will also discuss plans for 2025 to put more pressure on those in power.

Lani Teddy (Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāi Te Rangi) is a Research Fellow in the Department of Public Health, University of Otago and member of ASPIRE Aotearoa. Lani brings a hauora Māori perspective, focusing on the power of highlighting the voice and experience of rangatahi Māori who vape. This is crucial to the discourse on vaping among youth — Māori are disproportionately represented in the figures.

The webinar will be facilitated by Albany Senior High School principal Claire Amos, who is also the founder of DisruptED. Claire sees firsthand what addiction to vapes looks like in our kura. Claire will facilitate the Q&A at the end of the speakers’ kōrero.
